YOUTH UMPIRE PROGRAM

Welcome to the 2008 baseball season at the Clifton Park Baseball League! The league is proud to continue the tradition of allowing some of our youths to experience another element of the game by becoming youth umpires. It is a whole new experience for them, and some of our youths have gone on to become professional umpires.

Who is eligible: Anyone who is qualified to play in the Clifton Park Baseball League and has previously played in the League (does not have to be playing in the League this year) and will be at least 12 years old by 4/30/08 is eligible to enter the Youth Umpire Program as a candidate.

Requirements: Candidates must meet the following standards in order to qualify as a youth umpire:                           

1.   Attend all 5 training classes; returning umpires who scored 80 % or better on the 2007 youth umpire exam may skip 1 class but must attend the first and last classes

2.       Attend both on-field clinics

3.       Participate in at least 1 scrimmage game

4. Pass the final examination, to be given on 4/3/08
5. Demonstrate to the League Umpire-in-Chief that they possess the maturity and dedication that are necessary to be an effective umpire

Equipment fees: Youth umpires are expected to take responsibility for their own equipment. New umpires are assessed a one-time fee of $10 (due 3/10/08), for purchase of a hat, clicker, brush, and rule book. Umpires who lose or wear out their equipment are required to purchase replacements.

Pay Scale:

“Lower quad” games - $12 per umpire ($17 if only 1 umpire works ½ or more of the game); “Upper quad” games - $15 per umpire ($20 if only 1 umpire works ½ or more of the game)

Note: Only umpires who are 13 years old (by 4/30/08) and who meet minimum performance standards (such as grades on the final exam), as set by the Umpire-in-Chief, are eligible to work “upper quad” games
